Arthur tried to sit up, the wires pulling taut like chains.

Sarah caught him just as his strength failed. "You’re not strong enough, Arthur!" she warned, guiding him back to the safety of the bed.

The chaotic beeping subsided into a steady pulse. Arthur lay back, his breath ragged.

"She tried to get up too," he whispered. "In those last hours. She didn't want to go. She was fighting for every second she could have with me. And I’m sitting here trying to throw away the seconds she would have died for."

Sarah realized that Arthur had finally understood the weight of his actions.

"Every second you have is a second she fought for you to have," Sarah said softly. "Honor her by using them."
